In today's world, it's rare to find a song that perfectly captures the mood of a scene. If you were to ask for a composition that portrays lovers on a beach during a beautiful evening, with the moonlight reflecting off the waves, you couldn't do better than this one. It’s a testament to Ilayaraja's mastery in creating music that vividly brings the scene to life, capturing the emotions of the lovers with a melody that's both soothing and pleasant. I've listened to a lot of Western classical music with a similar theme, but often they feel either too slow or lack the soothing quality of this piece. Ilayaraja absolutely nailed it. As always, my idea is not to reproduce the song exactly like that but provide some inspiration on how it can be composed in different ways. Hope you like it!

At the 50th International Film Festival of India in Goa, Ilayaraja was asked to compose a background score for a rare and intense situation: a son killing his father. If I were in his shoes, I might have used a tried and tested chord progression to convey the emotion. However, Ilayaraja demonstrated why his background scores are so deeply impactful. He connected the scene to a musical idea by crafting a lullaby-style melody, evoking the bond between father and son. This decision highlighted not only his presence of mind but also his musical genius, especially in front of a large audience. He used a 6/8 bass rhythm, which resonates with our pounding heartbeat, making the music feel intimate, on top of a waltz melody (3/4). To add tension, he cleverly placed the melody so some notes start on the strong beat and some on the weak beat, and constructed it with short motifs rather than a continuous line, creating further tension. This combination created a background score that was both tense and soothing. I tried to recreate it in my own sloppy way, but I hope you enjoy it.

"Minnale Nee Vantthenadi" from May Madham is one of A.R. Rahman’s unforgettable gems. The song's haunting melody, delivered with deep emotion, floats over a fast, rhythmic string ostinato, creating a powerful sense of longing. The Technique is sometimes called juxtaposition. It is when two contrasting emotions are placed side by side to highlight their differences and intensify the overall emotional impact. For example, in this song, a slow, sad melody is paired with a fast, lively rhythm. This contrast makes the sadness feel even stronger because it’s set against something so different. AR used this technique so beautifully. Beside AR, the lyrics by Vairamuthu takes it to another level. And our beloved SPB make this song ever lasting with his magical voice. To experience the full effect of juxtaposition, one only needs to listen to the song's opening without the strings, which lacks the same emotional intensity.. But when you are using such fast moving Ostinatos, it is advisable not to over do this or else it starts to create a negative effect. AR beautifullly use it where ever he needed and leave the rest of the song in a very longing sensation creating beautiful counter melody in flute. Ilayaraja also recently used this technique in the song Neega mudiyuma from film Psycho. It creates exactly the same affect. As usual I tried to kill the song with my overdone orchestration, but I hope you still like it.
